Introducing Prime Meridian

Prime Meridian hand-lettered font

I spent the whole weekend putting the finishing touches on a brand new font and now it’s finally ready to make its debut. I call it Prime Meridian because the Os and Gs kind of reminded me of a globe. It comes with capital letters only, but also includes numbers and some basic punctuation and symbols. I plan to install it on the Over app on my iPad and use it for creating Instagram posts, but it has all sorts of fun potential uses.

Introducing the Sketchy Brush Pack

If you’ve followed me on Instagram for any period of time, you know that I really don’t like sketching.

I like diving headfirst into a project and letting the undo button be my sketch. But recently, I’ve been trying to train myself to sketch out my ideas to re-think layouts, lettering styles and sometimes colors. One project whwere I actually attempted to sketch first was this Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure quote, and I was thrilled with the way it turned out.

Maybe there’s something to this sketching thing after all!

So, with that in mind, I started working on a pack of brushes that made sketching more fun. I wanted pencils, ball-point pens, and even the look of a dried-out brush marker—which was modeled after one of my very own frayed and drying brush markers. That turned into this pack of 5 lettering brushes and a bonus texture called the Sketchy Brush Pack. You can get it now on Etsy and Creative Market.

Here is what comes in this brush bundle:

Side note: One of my favorite (and most time-consuming) pieces of all time was created entirely with the Pencil Pusher brush in this pack.

Free brush inspired by old school Nick

I’ve been watching a lot of YouTube videos about ’90s nostalgia and got inspired to make this brand new Procreate pattern brush. It reminded me of something you’d see on a wall at the old Nickelodeon Studios in Universal Studios on a summer break from school back in the day when every kid wanted a big orange couch, when getting covered in green slime was a badge of honor, and when the biggest drama in your life was deciding which Scholastic books to order.

Yay! My iPad Pro is working again!

Welcome Back - iPad Lettering by Alexis Gentry

My iPad was acting super weird over the past few weeks. I kept getting the “iPad storage full” message, even though I knew I had at least 30 gigs of free space on it and whenever I tried to open the Settings app, the whole thing would crash. After researching for days, I concluded that the only thing to do was a full backup/restore. I’ve had this iPad for a couple years now and have thousands of Procreate canvases on it, so I was terrified of losing it all, but I knew it might be the only way to get by favorite Apple device working again.

This weekend, I manually backed up all my Procreate brushes and canvases just in case the iCloud backup didn’t work. Then I erased the iPad, started the iCloud restore, and hoped for the best. It took a full four freaking days for Procreate to load from the iCloud backup (the icon was grayed out and I couldn’t open it) but once it was done, everything was exactly where it should be. So happy to not have to manually restore all that stuff! The “storage full” message is gone and I have almost a third of the total storage space free again. I have no idea what the problem was in the first place, but it’s such a ginormous relief to have my iPad back and to be able to do some lettering on that big screen again!

To celebrate, I’m releasing two new free brushes here and here. The first one is the stipple brush I used in this piece and the second is a dot brush I used for this one:
