My review of The Expendables is up now on Trashwire

August 13, 2010Leave a comment

It’s too bad The Expendables isn’t billed as a comedy, because it’s one of the funniest movies I’ve seen all year. Imagine if Tommy Wiseau was picked to write and directThe A-Team, but at the last second, they couldn’t secure the rights, so they had to make a low-budget rip off with aging action heroes. Yep, that’s The Expendables….

The whole internet is thirsty for Alexander Skarsgård as Olivia Colman’s wicker basket husband in Wicker, but does the movie live up to all the memes? “Why would I deceive you?” A braided and buff Nani leads Srikanth Odela’s new Telugu film, The Paradise, as the savior of a marginalized community trying to fight for their identity. Adapting a video game to a feature film is difficult because game mechanics like puzzle solving and resource management are exciting and challenging when you’re holding the controller, but hard to translate on screen. Na Hong-jin’s Hope might be one of the craziest films you see this year. A greedy corporation with an unregulated monopoly relentlessly pursues profits at the expense of the public good. That’s not just the fictional Acme corporation in Coyote vs. Acme, it’s also the story of the film itself, which has finally hit theaters after a multi-year battle. Shiva Nirvana’s Irumudi marks a cinematic redemption for Ravi Teja, reminding audiences that he’s one of the most versatile actors in the Telugu film industry. Lokesh Kanagaraj makes his acting debut in Arun Matheswaran’s stylish new Tamil film DC, which gives us a fresh take on Devdas meets Bonnie and Clyde. Kanagaraj and Wamiqa Gabbi light up the screen together as Das and Chandra in a story with gritty violence and intimate emotion, conveyed through striking cinematography from Mukesh G and some of Anirudh Ravichander’s best music to date. Can Spider-Man: Brand New Day finally reset the MCU? 🕷️
