Favorite underrated movies

I’ve been doing a little series over on TikTok and IG about my favorite underrated movies and thought I should collect a few of the videos here.

First up is Logan Lucky, which is an underrated gem. This Steven Soderbergh movie features Channing Tatum, Adam Driver, Riley Keough, and Daniel Craig as well as appearances from several other fantastic stars. It’s really funny and I can’t believe didn’t see it when it came out.

Next, we have my favorite Mel Brooks movie, High Anxiety. This is probably my most quoted movie of all time—I say “What a dramatic airport!” at least three times a week—and it deserves to be held in the same regard as Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein.

We all love Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein, but High Anxiety is my favorite Mel Brooks movie #melbrooks #melbrooksmovies #highanxiety #underratedmovies #movietok #filmtok

I also had to include one of my favorite movies, Attack the Block. This is John Boyega‘s first movie and I was lucky enough to interview him and director Joe Cornish at Comic-Con back in 2011 when this movie first came out.

I also wanted to include an early Peter Jackson movie that has a small cult following but deserves to be much more popular. The Frighteners stars Michael J. Fox and features Jackson’s excellent creepy, spooky visual style.

If you have an underrated movie recommendation, hit me up on Instagram, TikTok, Letterboxd, or BlueSky to tell me your faves.

Why I love Mel Brooks

Variety published a great little article about Mel Brooks today…

Mel Brooks: The king of comedy – Entertainment News, Profile in Excellence: Mel Brooks, Media

Thanks to “The Producers,” “Blazing Saddles,” “Young Frankenstein,” “High Anxiety” and a slew of other movie, stage, TV and album hits, Mel Brooks’ prominent place in the pantheon of comedy stars is assured. … http://bit.ly/cq7dNO

Which instantly reminded me of my favorite scenes from my favorite Brooks film, High Anxiety.

“Oooh, ‘xiety! It’s you… that I blame!”

“I am not going to listen to any more of this, I mean, I’ve *had* just about enough!”

The Psycho shower scene is my absolute fave, but embedding is disabled on YouTube, so you’ll have to watch it there. It starts about 4:40 in. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZTyHPh-9kD8

I used to watch this movie all the time when I was in elementary school and practically memorized it. I would estimate that I’ve seen it over 100 times.
