I reviewed ‘Tetris’ and ‘Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves’ for Trashwire

I’ve been in a little bit of a rut when it comes to mainstream American movies. I’m feeling an overwhelming sense of “meh” from Marvel these days and most of the big blockbusters that have arrived recently land around the three-star range for me.

Recently, I had the chance to see Tetris and Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves for Trashwire and I was pleasantly surprised by both. D&D, in particular, was surprisingly fun and had some solid laughs. My reviews for both are up now on Trashwire.

I watched two great Hindi movies on Netflix and you should too

Two movies I loved and would highly recommend to anyone looking for something to watch on Netflix: Gangubai Kathiawadi with Alia Bhatt and Pad Man with Akshay Kumar. Both are based on true stories and acted to perfection by their stars.

Pad Man is the story of a man in rural India who invents a low-cost maxi pad after seeing how much the women in his family struggle with sanitary solutions, but he faces tons of challenges like social stigma and competition from multinational corporations. I always hesitate to call a movie “wholesome” but this was really emotionally satisfying in a wholesome kind of way.

Gangubai is about a woman who is sold to a brothel and rises to power in order to protect sex workers and their children. Alia Bhatt’s powerhouse performance is just mesmerizing to watch and there is not a frame of this movie that isn’t visually gorgeous.

So if you aren’t afraid of subtitles and want something really fantastic to watch, definitely give these two a try.

My TRON: Legacy review is up on Trashwire.com

I really wanted to talk about the way technology is presented in film and the way it’s used to make films. It’s a little more film geekish than my usual reviews, but check it out and tell me what you think.

Through out film history, there have been films that have changed the game using technological innovations. Star Wars, Jurassic Park, Lord of the Rings and more recently Avatar became milestones for filmmaking because they used new technology to show us things beyond our wildest dreams. The original TRON was very innovative when it was released almost 30 years ago because realistic computer graphics were still a ways off in the future and more traditional methods had to be retooled to bring the film to life. Disney’s 2010 sequel, TRON: Legacy, uses the familiar CG we see in every movie to try to bring us the next chapter in the story, but the sleek filmmaking techniques of today don’t always bring the same awe factor.

My review of The Expendables is up now on Trashwire

It’s too bad The Expendables isn’t billed as a comedy, because it’s one of the funniest movies I’ve seen all year. Imagine if Tommy Wiseau was picked to write and directThe A-Team, but at the last second, they couldn’t secure the rights, so they had to make a low-budget rip off with aging action heroes. Yep, that’s The Expendables….
