MaxFund ain’t what it’s cracked up to be

As anyone who follows me on Twitter knows, I recently adopted a kitten. After a long and arduous search, one that included visiting tons of shelters, browsing PetFinder.com, and attending adoption events, I found the perfect guy for me at Denver Municipal Animal Shelter. His name is Señor Macho Solo (after 30 Rock) and he’s a lynx point Siamese. He’s sweet and playful and has boundless energy, something that encouraged me to find him a companion so he wouldn’t be so bored when I’m gone during the day.

The search began again as I tried to find the perfect sidekick for little Macho. I checked out the websites of various shelters, including Boulder Humane Society where I got two precious kittens as a child. Knowing that many shelters don’t haven time to constantly update their websites, and that there would likely be an influx of new kittens after Christmas as people “returned” their “gifts”, I decided to make a stop at MaxFund Animal Shelter in Denver. Widely publicized as a no-kill shelter that truly values the lives of animals, MaxFund seemed like a place where I could find a little buddy for Macho and feel good about supporting such a good cause. Little did I know what kind of insensitive and irresponsible behavior I would encounter.

I got a really cute cat and you can get one too

I was inspired by a story in Westword about Denver’s feral cat problem and ended up adopting a super sweet little kitten from Denver Municipal Animal Shelter, the pound where animal control takes the strays they catch. I’ve also heard great things about MaxFund Animal Shelter and my mom has two awesome cats from Boulder Humane Society. If you have room in your life (and your house) to adopt a cat, there are tons of them looking for homes.

I just wanted to post a blog with links to the three other cats I strongly considered adopting before I got Macho. They were all at Denver Municipal Animal shelter, and all extremely sweet and affectionate. If you’re in Denver and looking for a new furry friend to love, these guys are great choices.

At first, we thought she had black and white spots all over like a cow, but only her ears and tail are black. The rest of her is white. She’s really sweet and affectionate; she was purring up a storm when we were petting her. She’s only 2 so she’s also playful and energetic. If you’re looking for a slightly older cat that’s just as sweet and goofy as a kitten, she’s a great choice.

http://www.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=15049232?rvp=1This big lovely lady was in the cage directly opposite little Macho in the cat room, so I spent a lot of time petting her too. She’s a little older, so she’s more mellow than a kitten and she’s a pretty big girl. If she was a human, she’s be considered “husky” or “plus-sized”. Her fur’s really soft and she seems like she’d cuddle with you and be really chilled out and affectionate. Her makings are really pretty too.

http://www.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=15102243?rvp=1I saw a lot of gold cats in my many trips to shelters, but this guy was quite the gentleman. Aside from being super affectionate and loving, he was also very friendly and seemed to love people. He’s also talkative and often meows when you look at him or say something to him in a high pitched voice. Adorable! He’s got a small frame and reminds me of one of my mom’s cats. If you’re looking for a classy gentleman to bring home, he’s your guy.
