I watched two great Hindi movies on Netflix and you should too

Two movies I loved and would highly recommend to anyone looking for something to watch on Netflix: Gangubai Kathiawadi with Alia Bhatt and Pad Man with Akshay Kumar. Both are based on true stories and acted to perfection by their stars.

Pad Man is the story of a man in rural India who invents a low-cost maxi pad after seeing how much the women in his family struggle with sanitary solutions, but he faces tons of challenges like social stigma and competition from multinational corporations. I always hesitate to call a movie “wholesome” but this was really emotionally satisfying in a wholesome kind of way.

Gangubai is about a woman who is sold to a brothel and rises to power in order to protect sex workers and their children. Alia Bhatt’s powerhouse performance is just mesmerizing to watch and there is not a frame of this movie that isn’t visually gorgeous.

So if you aren’t afraid of subtitles and want something really fantastic to watch, definitely give these two a try.

A quarter-century of South Park

I wrote a recap of the season 26 premiere episode of South Park, “Cupid Ye”, for Trashwire and it dawned on me that I have been watching this show for most of my life. I’ve never missed an episode since I first started watching it back in the ’90s. Needless to say, I’m happy to see the show back for another season and I really enjoyed what Trey Parker and Matt Stone did with the episode. You can check out my recap on Trashwire here.

Whatcha Watchin playlist

At the start of the pandemic, I wanted to try to learn something new. I settled on making short review videos to talk about the streaming TV I’ve been watching. So far, I’ve made seven of them, and I’m hoping to make more in the future.

The most recent one is about Apple TV+ and why Ted Lasso convinced me to give the streaming service another chance after a somewhat disappointing launch.

If you want to check them all out, here’s the playlist on YouTube.

Learning new things during the pandemic

Let’s face it, things are pretty horrible right now between the coronavirus crisis and the growing civil unrest as America starts to reckon with its history of systemic racism. If you’re like me, when you need a break from all the anger and gloom, you binge watch TV shows on your favorite streaming services. You also attempt to do something creative or learn a new skill as a pick-me-up when things are on fire in the world around you. I wanted to learn basic video editing and create some new content for Trashwire, and the result is this little video I made about three great comic book shows I’ve loved.

This is my first attempt at one of these video reviews, so feedback is welcome. Feel free to leave a comment on YouTube or tweet me if you loved it or even if you hated it.

Stay safe out there, wear your mask, and let’s try to stay calm and support each other while we all deal with the chaos around us.
