I reviewed the Mario movie and AIR for Trashwire

It’s kind of crazy how much social media conversation has been sparked by The Super Mario Bros. Movie. It’s just an Illumination movie for kids, and yet people are so upset if you don’t think it’s the greatest thing ever made. I am one of those critics who didn’t love it (I thought it was fine) and I said so in my review.

I also made a TikTok about how the music in it was cliche. I stand by it. They should have used more music from the games and not the most cliche ’80s songs they could clear. But any criticism of this movie is apparently an attack on gamers, or makes you a cynical asshole, or means you’re pretentious for expecting a kids’ movie to be anything beyond super basic, or something along those lines.

I guess what I’m saying is, people need to calm the hell down about this movie.

I also reviewed AIR, which I liked a lot. But nobody’s losing their shit about this movie online because it’s aimed at adults.

And in addition to all that, Kim and I recorded a new episode of the Whatcha Watchin pod.

I’m so excited for Comic Con!

By this time next week, I’ll be in San Diego in the midst of having an amazing time at one of the funnest events in the U.S. and I can’t wait!

After years of wanting to go, I finally got the opportunity to attend my first Comic Con last year. I covered the event for Trashwire, taking pictures and videos, writing wrap-ups for each day and tweeting like a crazy person. It was the best long weekend ever and, since it happens to fall on my birthday, one of the best birthdays ever.

Last year’s highlight was definitely Gerard Way. As everyone knows, I really like My Chemical Romance, so seeing Gerard–and Ray and Mikey, who were also there–was the ultimate for me. I got to attend two of Gerard’s panels, one featuring several Dark Horse authors and one that was all about him, and it was very cool to see him outside of the band context. He seemed really kicked back, like he was just enjoying his weekend too.

This year, I have a lot of things on my wish list, so much so that I can’t even narrow it down to one or two that are my favorites. There’s a Napoleon Dynamite panel that sounds fun and a panel with William Shatner discussing his new documentary about all the Star Trek captains. The gang from The Simpsons will be there as will Colin Farrell, Nic Cage, Elijah Wood, a bunch of people from True Blood and a loads of surprise celebs.

I guess if I had to pick one I was most excited about, I’d say the Beavis and Butt-Head panel with Mike Judge. I grew up on that show and being able to see Mike in person talking about the revival of the show would be outrageously rad. I don’t want to jinx it, but I’m keeping my fingers crossed that I’ll be able to make it in to this one.

Anyway, just like last year, I’ll be posting on Trashwire and on the @Trashwire twitter account live from San Diego. I got a new camera a couple weeks ago, so I should have some great pics and I’ve been more on the grind with scheduling, so I should have better press perks. Of course, if it’s too awesome to be contained on Trashwire alone, I’ll post links here and on my Twitter account too.

Smooth Criminal goes classical

My friend Allen Klosowski knows how much I love Michael Jackson, so he tweeted me a link to this video this morning and now I feel the need to share it through every possible social media channel. These two dudes, Stjepan Hauser and Luka Sulic, play Smooth Criminal in a epic cello battle. Definitely check this out!

My review of An Idiot Abroad on Trashwire now

Tonight marked the US premiere of An Idiot Abroad, the travel show featuring The Great Orange-Headed One, Karl Pilkington. The series already aired in the U.K. and I was filled with jealous rage when I saw all the tweets and blog posts about how funny it was… but alas, it wasn’t available in the U.S.. I was reaching the point of ordering a PAL DVD player on Amazon just to be able to watch the series in its entirety. Thankfully, Science Channel solved my problems and announced that they would air the show right here in the good ol’ U.S. of A. The first episode, which featured Karl visiting China, aired just a few hours ago. I watched, tweeted like a mad man and wrote up a review of the show within a couple hours of the original air time.

Here’s a little slice of my review:

Before Ricky Gervais was pissing people off at the Golden Globes or writing the original version of The Office with friend and writing partner Stephen Merchant, he was marveling at the brain of Karl Pilkington, a radio producer assigned to the duo for their program. In fact, anyone who has listened to the widely popular Ricky Gervais Show podcasts or watched The Ricky Gervais Show on HBO is familiar with the musings of this “little, round-headed, bald, missing link, chimp-like buffoon”, as Gervais has so sweetly labeled him.

In the new series An Idiot Abroad, airing here in the U.S. on Science Channel, Gervais and Merchant send Pilkington on a trip around the globe to see various wonders of the world. Pilkington, who barely adjusts to the social protocol of his own culture, tries to wrap his little round head around foreign food, art and customs…..

You can read the whole thing on Trashwire.com.

To my pure delight, Science Channel actually tweeted out a link to my review to all their followers. They were all over Twitter during the show, posting replies and RTs to all the Pilkie fans out there. They did a kick ass job with social media and I couldn’t be happier that they distributed the link to Trashwire.

Check out a clip from An Idiot Abroad after the jump…
