My thoughts on ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’

May15

I recently finished reading the uber best-seller Fifty Shades of Grey, which will soon become a Hollywood production, and I was left feeling intrigued, disappointed, angered, amused, disgusted and entertained. I had a lot to say about the book–and I’m sure there are going to be tons of fans who launch a tirade at me, but I welcome any discussion, so go ahead and tweet me or hit me up on facebook to tell me what you think.

Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy Let me start off by saying that I’m no English Lit major and I’m not a big time reader, but I have read my fair share of book-to-screen adaptations and, since this book will soon become a movie, I feel qualified to make a judgement call. This review will contain some spoilers, so consider yourself warned!

Have you read the books? What did you think? And what does the popularity of BDSM erotica say about today’s women?

Shante, you stay! My favorite Rupaul’s Drag Racers of all time

November15

The new season of RuPaul’s Drag Race starts in January and saying I’m super psyched is an understatement. Recently Logo announced the new contestants and there are some that could be very memorable, but I’m not sure any could top the season three girls. The Heathers are legendary! Aside from the Heathers, there have been a lot of superstar queens on the past three seasons and I’ve done what only a superfan could do and made a list of my favorites. You can check out my list on Buzzfeed or, of course, on Trashwire.com, where I also have video clips from my favorite moments. Here’s a sneak peek:

10. Pandora Boxx
Pandora makes the list for her fun, creative style. Her sense of humor shined through in all of her looks and performances. Despite all that, the judges constantly gave her unwarranted negative critiques on the runway. Pandora had the last laugh, though. Her Absolut commercial is the most memorable of the bunch and she was the stand out Drag Professor on RuPaul’s Drag U. Her most memorable moment came from her hilarious impression of Carol Channing on the “Snatch Game” episode.

9. Ongina
Ongina may have been on of the smallest contestants, but she left on of the largest imprints on the show. She was high-energy and fun, like a little pixie, but it was her Viva Glam video that stood out as one of the most touching moments in all of Drag Race. After a joyful video about celebrating life, Ongina revealed that she was HIV positive, bringing pretty much everyone to tears. Ongina was a shining example of someone who always had a good attitude, even through tragedy.

8. Shannel
Who could possibly forget Shannel?! This season one stand-out was a true entertainer, a Las Vegas showgirl with a larger-than-life personality. Her outfits were creative, often showing off a lot of skin and bitch knew how to work a room. Shannel’s look, combined with her talent, commanded the attention of both the judges and the fans. Best moment: when her headpiece “accidentally” came off during her lip sync performance against Akashia, who is most definitely NOT on this list.

7. Jujubee
Juju was memorable for her incredible sense of humor. She was like a tiny, extra fierce Kimora Lee, whom she portrayed in the “Snatch Game” episode. She and Raven were the perfect duo and most of the funniest moments from season two came from their interactions. Juju’s best moment was the reading mini-challenge where she stole the show by throwing shade at the other girls.

6. Delta Work
Delta is on the list in the sixth position mostly because I wanted to avoid having all Heathers in the top four, even though they deserve it. Delta was one of the smartest and wittiest contestants on the show, often teaming up with Raja to throw shade about the other girls backstage during Untucked. Best moment: Delta was on fire during the QNN Untucked episode, but my favorite moment was when she and Raja were discussing Manila’s Asian reporter character and Delta referred to her as “dollar Chinese menu”, perfectly (and humorously) summarizing her performance.

I’m back to writing movie reviews (finally!)

October28

This year, I started my own business, which means I haven’t had much time for my beloved Trashwire. Aside from Comic Con this summer, the bulk of my days is spent creating Facebook and Twitter strategies for my clients. Not that I’m complaining, I absolutely LOVE my job!

This week, I had the chance to see two new movies, The Rum Diary, starring Johnny Depp, and In Time, starring Justin Timberlake. My reviews for both films are up on Trashwire now. Here’s a little taste:

The Rum Diary, based on the early Hunter S. Thompson novel, takes a searing look at excess and corruption in Puerto Rico in 1960. Johnny Depp stars as Paul Kemp, a journalist who travels to the island to write for a failing newspaper. Paul is a go-with-the-flow kind of guy who’s not out to mix up anything but a cocktail. And here’s the one for In Time:

Time is money in In Time, starring Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried. In this future society, everyone stops aging at 25 (when they’re at the height of hotness, coincidentally) and gets one year of time to “spend” trying to extend their lifespan. The super rich can live forever while the poor end up dying in the streets–yep, they’re dropping metaphors here–and someone’s got to shake up the entire system. Read the rest at Trashwire.com…

My good friend Brett Walker also wrote a review of In Time for Trashwire. You can check his review out at: itson.tw/sI0QCN.

My goal for 2012 is to update this blog a lot more, so hopefully I’ll have time to post more than twice a century! Until then, follow me on Twitter or like Trashwire on Facebook to get connected.

My review of An Idiot Abroad on Trashwire now

January23

Tonight marked the US premiere of An Idiot Abroad, the travel show featuring The Great Orange-Headed One, Karl Pilkington. The series already aired in the U.K. and I was filled with jealous rage when I saw all the tweets and blog posts about how funny it was… but alas, it wasn’t available in the U.S.. I was reaching the point of ordering a PAL DVD player on Amazon just to be able to watch the series in its entirety. Thankfully, Science Channel solved my problems and announced that they would air the show right here in the good ol’ U.S. of A. The first episode, which featured Karl visiting China, aired just a few hours ago. I watched, tweeted like a mad man and wrote up a review of the show within a couple hours of the original air time.

Here’s a little slice of my review:

Before Ricky Gervais was pissing people off at the Golden Globes or writing the original version of The Office with friend and writing partner Stephen Merchant, he was marveling at the brain of Karl Pilkington, a radio producer assigned to the duo for their program. In fact, anyone who has listened to the widely popular Ricky Gervais Show podcasts or watched The Ricky Gervais Show on HBO is familiar with the musings of this “little, round-headed, bald, missing link, chimp-like buffoon”, as Gervais has so sweetly labeled him.

In the new series An Idiot Abroad, airing here in the U.S. on Science Channel, Gervais and Merchant send Pilkington on a trip around the globe to see various wonders of the world. Pilkington, who barely adjusts to the social protocol of his own culture, tries to wrap his little round head around foreign food, art and customs…..

You can read the whole thing on Trashwire.com.

To my pure delight, Science Channel actually tweeted out a link to my review to all their followers. They were all over Twitter during the show, posting replies and RTs to all the Pilkie fans out there. They did a kick ass job with social media and I couldn’t be happier that they distributed the link to Trashwire.

Check out a clip from An Idiot Abroad after the jump…

Read my review of The Green Hornet on Trashwire.com

January14

Seth Rogen and Jay Chou in The Green Hornet

When you think of a comic book hero, the first name that pops into your head probably isn’t Seth Rogen. In fact, many things about The Green Hornet aren’t exactly conventional. The script was penned by Rogen and pal Evan Goldberg, who also wrote Superbad, and directed by Michel Gondry of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind fame. This unconventional team is exactly what makes this film feel new and different from the Iron Man explosion fests of the world. … Read entire article »
