Netflix Instant Watch now available for Mac!

November 8th, 2008 by Alexis

While I’m partial to crediting Barack Obama for every good change that’s happened in my life the past few days, this one comes from the peeps at Netflix. Yes, Mac users are now free from the tyranny of having to watch movies with Windows virtualization software.

Today, I received an email in my inbox that broke some of the best news I’ve heard in–well, in a couple of days.

Netflix Watch Instantly now available for Mac

So naturally, I fired up my new MacBook Pro (yes, I have the latest and greatest MacBook Pro, thanks to a very generous donation from my grandma) and decided to try it out. Not only did the movie load in a few short seconds, but the quality was amazing!

With the crazy economy, I had to downgrade my Netflix service to a lower plan to save a few bucks. Now I no longer feel additionally ripped off that I pay the same amount as Windows users, but can’t utilize all the services.

Anyway, this was huge news for me since I love Netflix, but I love my Mac even more.

Kevin Smith reaches comedy climax with ‘Zack and Miri’

November 2nd, 2008 by Alexis

Zack and Miri seems to follow the recipe for a great comedy. It takes one part View Askew cynical humor, one part Seth Rogen, a sprinkle of familiar faces from the Judd Apatow universe, and a little bit of romantic comedy sweetness, all garnished with a dash of full-frontal Jason Mewes, to make something that achieves what Clerks II only wished it could.

Celebrity Rehab proves strangely addictive

October 26th, 2008 by Alexis

Rodney King and Gary Busey walk into a bar… Actually, they don’t walk into a bar because they’re both patients on VH1’s Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew.

Yes, this new season brings us another cadre of dysfunctional celebrities trying to get sober, or rather, to get more screen time. The patient list includes Busey, King, model/actress Amber Smith, former American Idol contestant Nicki McKibbin, celeb spawn Sean Stewart, former hood ornament Tawny Kitaen, drummer Steven Adler and even an encore performance from everyone’s favorite bumbling train wreck, Jeff Conaway….

Danny McBride brings home the bacon

September 25th, 2008 by Alexis

Danny McBride is like the bacon on a cheeseburger. Without it, the burger is still good, but there’s just something even more delicious when you slap a couple pieces of bacon on top. Like the extra flavor from the bacon, McBride brings that extra level of funny to everything he touches.

I first took notice of McBride way back in Hot Rod, the critically panned comedy starring the guys from The Lonely Island about a guy with a moped who longs to be a stuntman. McBride played Rico, a crass member of Rod’s crew, and instantly captured my attention with his overly serious and incredibly hilarious delivery.

He was also one of the main reasons I went to see Tropic Thunder, the Ben Stiller/Jack Black/Robert Downey Jr. action comedy about a group of actors who find themselves in the midst of actual warfare. Though I wanted to see the film anyway, I was over the edge when I heard that McBride played a pyro crew guy opposite Nick Nolte. Again, I wasn’t surprised when McBride stole all his scenes, though I was a little disappointed that he wasn’t in more of the film.

McBride solidified his place as my favorite comedy cheeseburger garnish with his stellar turn in Pineapple Express. Like the cheeseburger, the film was excellent to begin with, but every scene with McBride as Red had me laughing so hard I couldn’t catch my breath.

Naturally, I ran home ad added The Foot Fist Way to my Nexflix queue, anxiously awaiting the DVD’s release. Yesterday, I finally received it and popped it in the DVD player. [...]

Spaghetti Cat

August 29th, 2008 by Alexis

Anyone who watches The Soup knows about the “Spaghetti Cat” incident. About a week ago The Morning Show with Mike and Juliet did a story about binge drinking when they suddenly cut to this:

The cat eating spaghetti from The Morning Show with Mike and Juliet

Well it seems that the strange picture was actually a “bleep photo” used as a cut-to when someone says something that’s deemed inappropriate for tv. A spokesperson for Fox told Media Bistro that viewers could expect a lot more of these bizarre “bleep photos” in the future on broadcast tv.

Media Bistro’s reply:

That isn’t distracting. That isn’t trivializing for a news show. They’re literally going to have dancing monkeys in lieu of a curse word - a cross word - a word?! The future just got a lot dimmer…and suddenly it looks a lot like LOLcats.

I couldn’t agree more. I don’t see how random cuts to strange images are any better than an actual bleep, a cut to black, or just letting the precious virgin ears of America hear a dirty word! I can only hope that it was a mistake and now this story they’ve given is their way of covering up their glitch.

Best Birthday Ever!

July 24th, 2008 by Alexis

I am always miserable on my birthday. Growing up, no one was ever around to come to my birthday parties because of summer break from school. When I got older, I had work or other obligations that prevented me from doing whatever I wanted.

This birthday broke that tradition in a big way!

For my 24th birthday, I got myself something that I haven’t had since I was about 17… a car!

My mom and I live just a few block apart and have been sharing a car since we moved to Denver in 2006. It was fine and good when I worked at the World Trade Center downtown because it was only about 5 blocks from my building. Now that I work a little farther away (at the best job ever!) I needed my own car.

I researched and debated for a few months, driving myself and all those around me totally insane in the process, before I settled on the Prius. It’s supposed to be better in town than on the highway and 99.9% of my driving is on the crowded streets of Denver. It’s much smaller than the Honda CRV my mom and I shared, so my inability to parallel park should be relatively cured. Not to mention the gas mileage, of course!

I tried every dealership for 100 miles and came up with nothing but an 8 month waiting list. I didn’t want to completely wipe out my life savings and have to wait almost a year for a car! So, I turned to Craig’s List.

It was there that I found a little white 2003 Prius that looked like the perfect fit. I’ve never been a huge fan of the newer hatchback look for the Prius, so the opportunity to get an old school model that looked like a car was just too good to pass up.

I purchased the car yesterday (after a very generous loan from my mom) and managed to get in and out of the DMV in less than 20 minutes… a miracle in itesef!

Since then, I’ve been loving every minute of it! In fact, I’m driving it up to Red Rocks this afternoon for Film on the Rocks.

‘Pineapple Express’ a killer bud comedy

July 17th, 2008 by Alexis

The great “Movie Stoner Duo Hall of Fame” includes Cheech and Chong, Jay and Silent Bob, Harold and Kumar, and now Dale and Saul, the main characters in the ridiculously funny Pineapple Expresss. The brilliant team from Superbad is back with a brand new stoner comedy that is weird, outrageous and bizarre, all while being incredibly funny.

Do you like reality tv?

May 14th, 2008 by Alexis

If you do, Trashwire has a brand new blog just for you!

Inspired by all the positive response to our Big Brother Blog, Alexis recently started TheTVGeek.com, a brand new companion blog to Trashwire that will focus on reality tv.

Don’t expect to see coverage of the huge juggernaut shows like American Idol or Survivor here. This blog will cover some some of the best guilty pleasure shows on TV as well as some smaller shows you might have missed.

Want to know who got kicked off Celebracadabra? Looking for behind the scenes clips from American Gladiators? Alexis will also keep you informed with reality updates and video clips from your favorite shows.
Here’s an example post from TheTVGeek

RuPaul’s Drag Race will air on Logo

It seems that RuPaul will be hosting his very own America’s Next Top Model type show for drag queens. Here’s some info from RuPaulsDragRace.com:

Drag is an art. Be it good or bad, sloppy or skillful, we love a man in a wig. That’s why LOGO and renowned drag performer Rupaul have decided to team up to host a drag competition where we’ll eventually be crowning the #1 Queen in the country!

I thin it sounds like a great idea. Miss Jay from America’s Next Top Model wishes he was a “fierce” as RuPaul and Tyra Banks has always reminded me of a drag queen, so it’s only fitting that one of the best drag queens of all time is going to be the Tyra on this new twist to ANTM. Check out the contestants and vote for your favorite on RuPaulsDragRace.com

Check out TheTVGeek.com or contact Alexis if you are interested in being a contributor to TheTVGeek.

MTV Movie Awards nominees and predictions

May 6th, 2008 by Alexis

Voting is now open for the MTV Movie Awards.

Nominees:

Best Comedic Performance:
Amy Adams - Enchanted
Johnny Depp - Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End
Jonah Hill - Superbad
Seth Rogen - Knocked Up
Adam Sandler - I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry
While Jonah Hill deserves this more than anyone else on this list, or possible in any film of the entire year, I think it will go to Seth Rogen because, well, he’s a genius.

Best Female Performance:
Amy Adams - Enchanted
Jessica Biel - I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry
Katherine Heigl - Knocked Up
Keira Knightly - Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End
Ellen Page - Juno
It’s gotta go to Ellen Page. Juno was one of the best films of the year and her performance was simply stellar.

Best Fight:
Alien vs. Predator - Alien vs. Predator: Requiem
Hayden Christiensen vs. Jamie Bell - Jumper
Matt Damon vs. Joey Ansah - The Bourne Ultimatum
Sean Faris vs. Cam Gigandet - Never Back Down
Tobey Maguire vs. James Franco - Spiderman 3
Chris Tucker & Jackie Chan vs. Sun Ming Ming - Rush Hour 3
I think I have to give this one to Tobey Maguire and James Franco. Spiderman 3 kinda sucked, but the fight sequence was pretty cool.

Best Kiss:
Amy Adams and Patrick Dempsey - Enchanted
Briana Evigan and Robert Hoffman - Step Up 2 the Streets
Shia LaBeouf and Sarah Roemer - Disturbia
Ellen Page and Michael Cera - Juno
Daniel Radcliffe and Katie Leung - Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
If this doesn’t go to Ellen Page and Michael Cera, something is wrong with the universe. That was one of the best screen kisses ever, if not one of the best scenes ever. Brilliant all around!

Best Male Performance:
Michael Cera - Juno
Matt Damon - The Bourne Ultimatum
Shia LaBeouf - Transformers
Will Smith - I Am Legend
Denzel Washington - American Gangster
Michael Cera is clearly the best here (can you tell I’m a huge Juno fan?) but I kinda think this one’s going to Shia LeBeouf.

Best Villain:
Javier Bardem - No Country for Old Men
Johnny Depp - Sweeney Todd
Topher Grace - Spider-Man 3
Angelina Jolie - Beowulf
Denzel Washington - American Gangster
I don’t know how many MTV-aged kids saw it, but Javier Bardem was so fantatic in No Country that he should probably win almost anything he’s nominated for.

Breakthrough Performance:
Nikki Blonsky - Hairspray
Chris Brown - This Christmas
Michael Cera -Superbad
Zac Efron -Hairspray
Megan Fox -Transformers
Jonah Hill -Superbad
Christopher Mintz-Plasse - Superbad
Seth Rogen - Knocked Up
If we’re talking breakthrough, the real winner should be Christoper Mintz-Plasse because this was his first foray into acting and who doesn’t love McLovin?

Best Summer Movie So Far:
The Chronicles Of Narnia: Prince Caspian
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
Iron Man
Sex And The City: The Movie
Speed Racer
If we look at the box office, it should be Iron Man, but Indiana Jones could also take it home.

Best Movie:
I Am Legend
Juno
National Treasure: Book of Secrets
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End
Superbad
Transformers
Clearly I want Juno or Superbad to win this award. Both are witty, smart and well-written… and I have kind of a thing for Michael Cera. Despite all that, I think this one’s gonna belong to Transformers. This is MTV after all.

You cast your vote at MTV.com.

MTV’s “Rock the Cradle” is like heroin

May 2nd, 2008 by Alexis

I have a very dangerous addiction to MTV’s Rock the Cradle, the American Idol style show where the children of music stars compete for viewer votes. I would compare this to a drug addiction because, while it’s probably destroying my brain to watch this trash-tastic series, I just can’t stop tuning in. It’s the ultimate guilty pleasure!

My Chemical Romance : Rock Superheroes

April 15th, 2008 by Alexis

My Chemical Romance signed my review of their show last March

It’s hard for me to write a review of a My Chemical Romance show without filling it with hyperbole and grand statements about how they are the greatest band ever. After seeing them last March at Magness Arena during their giant tour supporting The Black Parade, I was beyond excited to get another chance to bathe in the awesomeness of MCR.

Hulu, the premium YouTube

March 27th, 2008 by Alexis

These days, there are hundreds of ways to watch videos online and sometimes it can be hard to weed out the crap from the good stuff. Sites like YouTube are polluted with poor quality videos or catch-them-while-they-last clips from your favorite TV shows. That’s where Hulu.com comes in.

Hulu could be awesome

March 26th, 2008 by Alexis

By now I’m guessing a lot of you have heard about Hulu, the new video site which features network TV and full length movies. I posted a clip on here from Saturday Night Live with Jonah Hill that was up on Hulu. The site provides higher quality video and legit content (no user-created stuff) including some videos exclusive to Hulu.

Best of all, you can watch full episodes of some of the best TV shows, like, oh, say…30 Rock!!! The only downside is that you have to sit through about three commercials within each show.

While I doubt this will replace anyone’s TV or iTunes, it is certainly a great way to catch up on episodes or clips you might have missed. No more do you have to worry about embedding a YouTube clip on your blog only to find that the network has had it pulled from the site for copyright infringement and the video no longer plays.

I can see this being huge for bloggers like myself because I can embed the best sketches from SNL without having to upload them myself or risk dead links on YouTube.

Definitely check out Hulu.com and see for yourself… or just enjoy this FULL EPISODE of 30 Rock.
