Congratulations ‘West Bank Story’

February27

Sunday night, all of Hollywood got glamed up for the the 79th Annual Academy Awards. After the hours of red carpet interviews and arrival footage, I was a little burnt out before the show even began. Thankfully, Ellen DeGeneres was such a good host that I got back into it after the Mac-commercial-like opening.

As I watched the show, my friends and I were guessing which films would take home the award in each category and keeping score. I’m happy to say that I won the little competition by guessing almost 20 categories correctly. Ironically, after going on a 15-0 winning streak, I incorrectly predicted Babel for Best Picture instead of the winner, Martin Scorcese’s amazing film The Departed. I loved both films, but I’d heard so much buzz about Babel that I was sure it would be the winner. It was still a pleasant surprise that another film I really liked ended up winning.

The glitz and glamor of the major awards weren’t the most impressive moment. For me, the best win was in the Live Action Short Film category where Ari Sandel’s West Bank Story took home the prize. I had the pleasure of seeing this film at the Toofy Film Festival in Boulder this year and I fell in love with it right away. It was smart, incredibly funny and the performances were phenomenal. For those who might not be familiar with the film, it is a hilarious musical about two competing falafel stands in the West Bank. In a new take on West Side Story, David, an Israeli soldier, falls in love with the beautiful Palestinian cashier, Fatima, despite the animosity between their families’ dueling restaurants. It was so fantastic that, right after I saw it, I immediately looked it up online to see where I could see it again. I’d even compare it to the great musical comedies by Trey Parker and Matt Stone. I simply could not have been happier that something this great, and this funny, won an Oscar.

The Bald Attention Whore

February21

Was I right or what? A little while ago, I wrote a piece on here saying that most of these Hollywood starlets, like Britney Spears, Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan and Tara Reid, are attention whores who will do anything for the spotlight. In the article, which I wrote shortly after Anna Nicole Smith’s death and the impending media circus that followed, I said that, “I wouldn’t be surprised if right now Paris Hilton is trying to figure out how steal the spotlight from Anna Nicole Smith. Maybe she’s asking around and trying to see how she could overdose and die, but still watch herself on Entertainment Tonight.” While it might not be Paris who is seeking the coveted paparazzi lens, Britney Spears has shocked and horrified us all by shaving her head, getting weird tattoos, having a break down, and going to rehab. Take that, Anna-Nicole-legal-battle-controversy! Britney has just dealt a major blow to the biggest entertainment story and managed to get all the “reporters” on ET, E! News, and even Court TV to stop talking about Anna Nicole for a few hours and devote all their attention to her. It’s only a matter of time before Paris or Lindsay start setting themselves on fire in their own desperate plea for attention.

Stop Bobby Trendy!

February20

Can someone make Bobby Trendy go away?

If we look him up on Wikipedia, we see:
Since the death of Anna Nicole Smith, Bobby Trendy has given numerous press interviews, including appearances on CNN, Fox News and The Howard Stern Show. In an interview with Michael Musto of the Village Voice, Trendy said: “Anna Nicole Smith made me famous. I’m the most famous designer in the world and I’m forever grateful to her. I just made the call to ask about buying her a star on the Walk of Fame! Even though she spread her legs and bared her genitals, she was not a whore. She was the breadwinner of the family. Howard K. Stern led her in the wrong direction by isolating her from other people.” Of Stern, Trendy went on to say: “I saw him as a coat tail-riding ambulance chaser.”

I love that he’s claiming he was her BFF. I love that he was so shaken up by her death that he immediately went on a giant media tour. I love how, in most of his interviews, he was dressed the way Paris Hilton usually dresses her dog. There is just so much that’s wrong about Bobby Trendy. So much. There’s trashy good and then there’s trashy creepy and he definitely falls into the trashy creepy category.

Carlos Mencia Gets Served

Joe Rogan became my hero the other day when he went crazy on Carlos Mencia onstage at the Comedy Store. Mencia is a well-known joke thief in the comedy industry and Rogan was one comedian who had the balls to call him out on it. It was like something out of You Got Served as Rogan verbally kicked Mencia’s ass and the crowd cheered him on. The video, which has been circulating the internet, apparently got Rogan banned from the Comedy Store. That’s so insane! So, someone who steals other people’s jokes, yells annoying catch-phrases and brings little to the table in terms of talent can perform there, but not the person who stands up to said hack? I knew Rogan was a funny dude, but this makes him totally awesome.

By the way, “Carlos Mencia” isn’t even his real name. His dad is German and his mom is Honduran. His real name is Ned.
